It was a great day for the veterans and everyone else involved in SaddleBrooke Senior Softball’s annual Veterans Day Tournament at the community’s ball field.
The large crowd, which featured players, families, friends, and neighbors, was treated to free food, lively music, entertaining commentary, and exciting games. They were all enthusiastic, cheering the good plays and groaning on the not-so-good ones.
Red, white, and blue bunting hung from the fences and created a strong patriotic theme. There were plenty of free hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, cookies, chips, soda, and water to add to the fun. As usual, Window Wizard’s Doug Wagers and softballer Joe Passoni expertly grilled the food. Debra Miller/State Farm and Cactus Overhead Garage Doors graciously sponsored the festivities.
There were four games in all. The first two games included Community League and Coyote League players. The third game combined Recreation League and Sidewinder League players, and the final game pitted Competitive League players against each other. Throughout the games, public address announcer King Mitchell provided lively, entertaining play-by-play and good-natured ribbing. He gave nicknames to players, offered unheeded advice, and made sure to highlight miscues. Disc jockey Leroy Johnson played an eclectic mix of music, adding to the festive atmosphere.
But the highlight of the day was acknowledging the veterans everywhere, especially our own members of the U.S. armed forces. Tournament Director Jessica Passoni invited all veterans in attendance to come onto the field and allowed the crowd to show their gratitude for all the sacrifices they have made to ensure our safety and freedom.
Thank you to all those neighbors who came down and the players and volunteers who worked hard to put on the event. Thanks again to our overall Veterans Day Tournament sponsors Debra Miller/State Farm and Cactus Overhead Garage Doors for their generous support.
The tournament is one of four holiday events conducted every year. The next one is St. Patrick’s Day. SaddleBrooke Senior Softball plays all year round, Monday through Friday, in five different leagues, based on ability.
