The day of the Health Fair dawned as an unusual October day. It was raining. While life-giving rain in the desert is always welcome, there were moments of anxiety about the rain’s impact on the fair. Fortunately, hardy fairgoers were not deterred by the weather and the morning soon yielded the famous SaddleBrooke sunshine.

Over 1200 people were in attendance. Response to the Prevnar 13® pneumonia booster was excellent. Over 300 people received flu or pneumonia shots; several had a shingles vaccine.

Sheftel Healthy Skin stayed busy with free skin cancer screenings. The University of Arizona’s (now Banner) Audiology and Ophthalmology departments had full schedules doing hearing and vision tests. Pharmaceutical students worked diligently on sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure and other screenings.

The mini-seminars by Oro Valley physicians proved very popular. Dr. Tucker, Dr. Wing and Dr. Martin gave freely of their time and knowledge as they presented valuable information and answered individual questions.

Winners of IMPACT Drawings

Lance Nelson was a winner of a drawing sponsored by IMPACT of Southern Arizona. He won for guessing the number of families served in the Catalina Food Bank this past year. It was 875. Barbara Wilder won two drawings. She had the closest guess for the number of different people who shopped in the Loving Threads Clothing Bank this past year; the total was 1754, and she also submitted the closest guess to the number of meals served to seniors last year; it was over 21,000. IMPACT provides two delivery routes in SaddleBrooke three times a day to seniors who are homebound, have medical issues or are in medical recovery. On a less serious note, Joe Schullik entered the closest guess for candy corn in the jar – it was 903.

More eyeglasses were donated this year and the traditionally large quantity of expired medications were dropped off for proper disposal.

Dave’s Diner provided tasty burgers and dogs at very reasonable prices and did a brisk business.

A special note of gratitude must be expressed for the dedication, willingness and skill of the SaddleBrooke One staff. They planned, prepared, coordinated and worked tirelessly to help this large event work smoothly. Over 100 SaddleBrooke volunteers helped with the successful operation of the fair and all exhibitors from many specialties contributed to an outstanding day.
