On Monday, November 27, at 7:00 p.m., SaddleBrooke Health and Wellness will treat you to a most informative talk by radiation oncologist, Dr. Gordon Grado. Dr. Grado has an incredible history of successful treatment of prostate cancer. During the past few years, Dr. Grado has experienced success in treating many other types of cancer with TomoTherapy that were formerly considered untreatable.
At Southwest Oncology Centers all types of cancers are treated either with TomoTherapy machine or other specialized equipment. The TomoTherapy machine is useful for treating prostate, breast, pancreatic, colon, brain, lung, bone, and other types of cancers. The TomoTherapy machine can shape the treatment beam to all types of tumors to provide maximum radiation to the tumor with minimal damage to normal tissue. Certain types of early stage breast cancers can be treated with electronic brachytherapy, at the time of lumpectomy, as a single treatment. Also, skin cancers are treated with the same electronic brachytherapy machine which provides excellent cosmetic results. Radioactive seed implants can be used for prostate and other types of cancers.
Dr. Gordon Grado is the founder and Medical Director of the Southwest Oncology Centers, with four locations in Arizona, and developer of three centers in Latin America. He has also helped develop and teach brachytherapy programs worldwide. Dr. Grado established a new program for the treatment of prostate cancer in 1989 while he served as Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. He led a team of specialists to develop the first interactive program that would utilize both biplane ultrasound and fluoroscopic imaging with brachytherapy and for the treatment of prostate cancer. He has also developed prostate brachytherapy programs for early stage, advanced and recurrent prostate cancer and has personally performed this procedure more than 8,000 times. In addition to his private practice, he has also held academic appointments at several institutions including the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota School of Medicine where he was the head of the prostate brachytherapy program at the University of Minnesota Prostate Cancer Center. He has delivered more than 100 presentations throughout the world and has authored many peer reviewed reference manuscripts. In 2005 he became a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology and a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He was honored at the University of Minnesota where he was presented the Wurtele Family Professorship in Therapeutic Radiology and Radiation Oncology and in 2013 he was given an honorary PhD by his alma mater, Eastern Illinois University. The Governor of Arizona appointed him to serve on the Arizona Prostate Cancer Task Force. Dr. Grado and his wife Mar, have helped support and develop cancer treatment centers in Aguascalientes and Chihuahua, Mexico as well as San Salvador, El Salvador. He currently serves as a board member for Adelante Healthcare.
