Foxtrot: A Timeless Classic

Linda and Roger Shamburg

Pat Knepler

The foxtrot originated in the United States around 1914. It was named after Harry Fox, a vaudeville entertainer who developed a style of trotting to ragtime music. Today it is one of the most popular ballroom dances in the world due to its versatility. It is a graceful dance using long walking steps and short quick steps where the dancers seem to be gliding across the floor. Knowing how to foxtrot will serve you well the next time you find yourself attending a special occasion, such as a wedding, where there is dancing.

Your instructors will be Roger and Linda Shamburg, two experienced teachers and elegant dancers. Beginner and Intermediate Foxtrot will be taught in September on Sundays and Tuesdays in the MountainView ballroom. The beginner classes start on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. Intermediate classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. Classes are free for club members, with non-members able to attend one class to be sure it is a fit before joining. Registration is required, so please sign up online.

The second class, on Sept. 10, will be tango. There will be a review session for both dances on Sept. 24, also at 4 p.m. in the Mariposa Room. Western Partner Review

Back to School?

Be sure to save the date of Sept. 16 for our Back to School Sock Hop dinner-dance! It’s your chance to once again be a “bobbysoxer.” Remember those poodle skirts, varsity jackets, and saddle shoes? It should be a fun and nostalgic night! Please register on the club website at sbballroomdance.com.
