SaddleBrooke Freethinkers are proud to have Professor Lalitha Madhavan, MD, PhD, in the Department of Neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine speak on “How Aging Affects Brain Cell Regeneration” on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 9:45 a.m. A coffee social begins at 9:15 a.m.

Dr. Madhavan will present an update on the recent medical technologies for brain stem cell regeneration and their applications to aging.

Dr. Madhavan practiced clinical medicine but moved to research, as she felt that advances in basic science are the best way to treat brain disorders. She has significant expertise with a variety of stem cells and with cellular/animal models of neurodegeneration, which have been applied over the past several years toward understanding the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as developing novel therapeutics. Within this framework of her research, the lab has discovered a major mechanism controlling the activity of brain stem cells during aging. This finding has important implications with regard to how the brain’s own regenerative potential can be harnessed to counter aging.

Dr. Madhavan completed her medical degree at Baroda Medical College in India. She completed a PhD in neuroscience at Iowa State University and a postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH Udall Center of Excellence in Parkinson’s disease research at the University of Cincinnati. She joined the University of Arizona in 2011. Dr Madhavan is also a member of the Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute and the Bio5 Institute.
