Twelve Women On Our Own members enjoying the 99th Annual Tucson Rodeo, La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros

On Feb. 17, 12 Women On Our Own (WOOO) ladies got their cowgirl on, sporting their boots, wranglers, hats, and loudest “Yee-Haws,” and attended the 99th Annual La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros, better known as the Tucson Rodeo.
Arriving early in the day, the ladies enjoyed watching the 5- to 8-year-old cowgirls and cowboys engage in the Kid’s Rodeo with Mutton Bustin’. Great fun! This led to a wide variety of more serious competitions featuring the professional rodeo headliners. It is noted that professional rodeo consists of two types of competition: rough stock events and timed events. The WOOOers cheered on the cowboy saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, and bull riding events, as well as the cowgirl barrel racing. All events are sanctioned by both the Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. An all-around cowboy crown is awarded to the cowboy with the most money won in two or more events.
After sitting on the hard arena seats for four hours, the ladies of WOOO were ready to wrap up their saddlebags and head back to the corral—SaddleBrooke. But be sure of this—they will return next year for the Centennial Celebration of La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros, which is a time-honored celebration of Tucson’s great cultured history and downright fun!
As you can see, WOOO women are always active and seeking out ways to learn about and enjoy the great Southwest culture that we call home. And what is even more important, we enjoy these adventures together!
