Unit Happenings

Unit 3-S Potluck Party

Brenda Newitter

On Saturday evening, Sept. 10, residents blocked off traffic and gathered together outside on a cul-de-sac in Unit 3-S to celebrate two great fall festivals: Oktoberfest and Columbus Day Italian Festa.

The infamous Unit 3-S cooks created a spread of German and Italian food, which was delicious. Other residents driving by were drooling and wishing they lived in Unit 3-S!

There were games, music, food, drink, and socializing with friends and neighbors, which made the evening a lot of fun and a great way to get to know others in Unit 3-S. It was another great evening in the desert that will be remembered by all.

Unit Nine Celebrates Taco in a Bag Night

Scott Baker

Unit Nine held its fourth annual Taco in a Bag night with 50 members attending the event. What is Taco in a Bag? You take a small Frito snack bag, smash the Fritos into small pieces, then cut across the top of the bag. Now add to the bag seasoned ground beef, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, salsa, and top with sour cream. Now enjoy your Taco in a Bag! It was a fun evening for everyone.

Unit 27 Activities

Eileen and Jeff Depka hosted the monthly Snack and Chat on Sept. 17. The weather provided a good opportunity for them to utilize their large, covered patio with roll-up blinds, as well as the rest of their backyard. With plenty of seating space, many of the attendees spent time outside until the ankle-biting no see’ums came around. They had a sizable turnout, and many attendees stayed inside, closer to the big spread of food. Snack and Chats are a good place to meet your neighbors, and attendees at the Depka Snack and Chat had an opportunity to say hi to new Unit residents Berit and Peter Valen.

Eileen has traditionally decorated the house and yard every year for Halloween. However, last year after Halloween, she gave away virtually all the décor. Nonetheless, she hasn’t been able to resist acquiring a few new pieces, some of which greeted people as they arrived for the Snack and Chat event. Now the question is, does she still have all her (many) Christmas decorations? And, if so, has she acquired more decorations? The answer to those questions will have to wait until Saturday, Dec. 3, when she and Jeff have invited all unit residents to the annual Depka Holiday Open House.

Fira Stout again organized a Unit 27 Dine Around, this time on Sept. 20 at HiFalutin Rapid Western Grill. HiFalutin styles itself as a Southwestern twist on comfort food classics, and they serve huge portions of food! Approximately 26 residents attended, and after the food was served, the noise level went down significantly. As diners were finishing, take-home boxes were distributed to many of the diners. Both the kitchen and the waitstaff were very prompt, and it appeared that diners were enjoying themselves. Thanks again, Fira!

In addition to the Depka Holiday Open House, the Ladies Holiday Lunch, organized by Fira Stout and Jeannie Hepner, will be held Friday, Dec. 2, again at Vivace Restaurant. And the Unit 27 Holiday Party, organized by Jan Talbot, will be Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the MountainView Ballroom.

Moonlight Madness Hits Unit 46!

A full moon glowed brightly on Sept. 10 as maniacal laughter rang out and eerie lights glowed at the MountainView Golf Course putting green. Was it space aliens? A scene out of Stephen King’s latest book? No, it was 46 intrepid putters from Unit 46 honing their nighttime putting skills. For some, it was an opportunity to shine. For others, it provided ample excuse for missed putts!

The evening began with a wonderful chicken pesto casserole dinner hosted by Tony and Nancy Jewett. As the sun went down, the party, adorned with glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets, adjourned to the golf course. Armed with glow in the dark golf balls, the golfers, in teams of four, set off to play 18 holes set up on the putting and pitching greens. A challenging course awaited the putters, designed by the Unit 46 “grounds team” of Dan and Mary Kay Nordhill, Tony and Michelle Jewett, Greg and Carla DeWolf, and Bob and Jan Laufmann. Obstacles including curves, ramps, and zoo animals greeted the putters as they made their way around the course. Cheers, groans, and laughter filled the air. There were some holes-in-one, but only one at the “Money Hole,” where Mike Deal showed how it was done and won $20 for his efforts.

Ice cream awaited the putters as they finished their rounds and turned in their score cards. After the scores were tallied, bragging rights and cash prizes went to the following putters:

1st place: Greg and Carla DeWolf and Mike and Michelle Deal

2nd place: Neba Reiter and Raye Cobb, Nancy Jewett, and Mary Kay Nordhill

3rd place: Peter and Linda Lewis and Jim and Louise Weiss

4th place: Tom and Maria Blong and Rob and Pam Scott

5th place: Tony and Michelle Jewett and Ed and Sandy Masotti

Last place: Peter and Theresa Ashton and Andy and Peggy Downs

Some putters are thinking of more practice in the moonlight, though they may need to dodge the sprinklers!
