This year’s Bubba Hawkins Tournament co-hosted by MPMGA and MPWGA

Bob Edelblut

On Thursday, February 12 the annual Bubba Hawkins Golf Tournament was played at the MountainView Golf Course. The Men’s and Women’s Golf Associations co–hosted the event starting a collaboration that will certainly find new ways to make this event a must do for the years to come. Thanks must go out to Bob Eder and all those who assisted him in making this year’s event special, especially Ron Victor, Rennie Temple, Connie Sherman and Lee Rock. Thanks to all! Equally we would like to thank our featured sponsor Dr. Patrick Shaffer DDS for his continued support.

The actual golf event, a modified scramble with several interesting challenges added for fun, was only part of the occasion. On Monday, February 9 a pairings party with a seated dinner was held. Most of the 92 players were in attendance and had to wait and wait until their names were drawn to discover who they would be paired with. Thank goodness the bar was open! The Bubba’s finale was a dinner dance complete with a silent and a live auction at MountainView attended by over 120 people. Music was provided by Jukebox Journey and the entire room and tables were decorated in both a Valentine and Bubba/Sadie décor. Thanks again to the ladies from the MPWGA for all you did to make the dinner dance special. And thanks again to all of you who helped raise over $4,500 for the Cure for Cancer. Fantastic!

For the golf tournament the field was divided into three flights: the Tracy and Hepburn, the Burns and Allen and the Sonny and Cher. There were at least six four-player teams in each flight and amazingly when the scores were tallied all teams scored within nine strokes of the winner. First place overall was the team comprised of Fred Dianda, Gail Campbell, Tim Koch and Sue Staker representing the Burns and Allen Flight with a net score of 58. Second in the flight was the team of Bill Burnett, Dick Helms, Cookie Kaplan and Debbie Ogle with a score of 60 and third was the team of Denny Dalton, David Fosmire, Mike Bershaw and Sue Braun with a score of 61. In the Sonny and Cher flight George Kaplan, Jo Helms, Gary Hodges and Aleta Rosenthal finished first with a net score of 60. Two teams tied for second with net 62s in this flight. They were Don Erickson, Tom Winch, Dorothy Moore and Betty Cole on one team and John Borchert, Joe Oczak, Paula Michels and Debbie Hammer on the other. In the Tracy and Hepburn Flight there were three teams tied for first with a net 60. Team one was Bob Maruniak, John Bidegain, Lan Nguyen and Joyce Sutay. Team two was Janey Clausen, Tim Ward, Ralph Taddeo and Pilar Borm. Team three was Phil Gray, Tim Benjamin, Sandi Cooper and Shirley Blunt. Congratulations to all the winners and especially to those who shot 58!
