Summer Golf Fun with the SaddleBrooke Lady Niners

Wanda Ross

Even though many of our snowbird members are away from SaddleBrooke for much, if not all, of the summer, we remaining Lady Niners have fun golfing events every week throughout the summer. Let’s hear it for our hearty members who play in all weather conditions. Lately, there’s been more wind than usual. That sometimes affects the flight of our balls, but it does cool us down. We summer golfers bring plenty of water or maybe even Gatorade, wear wet cooling cloths around our necks, and use portable fans and sprayers. We gladly do whatever it takes to get us out on the course, outside in nature, and having a fun golfing time on our beautiful courses. For us, the fun outweighs the weather.

A special day for the Lady Niners was June 15. On that day, we showed our support for the very worthy cause of LPGA*USGA Girls Golf of Tucson. This wonderful organization provides an opportunity for girls, ages seven to 17, to learn to play golf, build lasting friendships, and experience competition in a fun, supportive environment, preparing them for a lifetime of enjoyment with the game. We invited four of the girls to golf with us and then join us for lunch. What a joy it is to see these young girls who already have a love for golf.

At the general meeting and luncheon following golf, we presented a check for over $1,000 to Girls Golf of Tucson. The money was raised from our very successful basket raffle in January. Many thanks to all the basket donors and purchasers who enabled us to make this meaningful donation for the girls who will be the future of golf. Thanks also to Vicki Long, our social chair, who decorated the tables so beautifully for our scrumptious luncheon.

We summer golfers want to thank Mike Roddy, our director of golf, who keeps our courses looking magnificent, and Jane Chanik, our head golf professional. Jane supports the Lady Niners and our activities all year long, plus many of us are improving our golf by taking lessons with her. Together Mike and Jane create wonderful golf experiences for us. We also thank our wonderful sponsors Coyote Golf Cars, Golf Cars of Arizona, and Morris Hall PLLC for their support.

July is another month of opportunity. Why? Because starting in July, the rates to join the SaddleBrooke Lady Niners drop drastically. If you or your friends have been thinking about joining but don’t want to pay the $100 fee for only part of the year, now is your opportunity! New members may join for only $65 starting in July and start playing immediately. This is the perfect time to become a Lady Niner and join us in the fun of golf. Every Tuesday morning, we golf in friendly nine-hole games at one of the three SaddleBrooke golf courses. We also have a variety of competitive tournaments throughout the year. Check us out at www.sb9ers.org. New membership applications are available outside the SaddleBrooke Pro Shop in the posting room.
