5:00 p.m. – Thursday March 16, 2017
* Friends of the Library occupy MountainView Ballroom for their monthly lecture. Two hundred plus people are seated listening spellbound to a lecture on Admiral Isoroku Yamamot, Japan’s premier naval strategist. They have no idea that 65 square dancers wait in the hall for their turn at the ballroom.
* Ballroom doors and people pour out, square dancers peek into a ballroom filled with chairs. Enter superman – John Fazio – new Banquet Manager for HOA 2 and his crew. Ten minutes later all chairs have disappeared – eight dinner tables are all set up decorated for Saint Pat’s. The floor is cleared for dancing and the sound system is set up for our square dance caller.
It takes about 30 minutes to admit 65 dancers who are busy greeting each other and catching up on the latest news.
By 6:00 p.m. everyone is seated and ready to enjoy a light meal of ham, turkey, potatoes, broccoli and rolls. Dessert is served with coffee and we are almost ready to hit the dance floor. Almost – but first we need to recognize Larry Kraber, our home caller’s birthday, with a cake and song. Now we turn the dancers loose.
Seven squares and at times eight squares dance to the calls of our guest caller Dave Guille from Cheyenne, Wyoming. We learn new steps – fumble through old steps, laugh and let the skirts twirl and fly. We even enjoyed having spectators who happened by the open door – peaked in – came in and clapped us on. Dancers from Sun City, Dove Mountain, San Manuel and Winkelman helped make this a Saint Pat’s dance we will remember for a long time.
Sound like fun? The squares dance every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in the MountainView Ballroom. On Sundays at 7:00 p.m. the club has practice workshops to help those along who have danced before and want to get back into the swing and do-c-dos and starting Sunday, October 8 lessons will start up again for those who want to learn square dancing or refresh main stream calls and plus calls that the club used to dance to.
Information can be found on the club’s website www.saddlebrookesquares.com or you can phone the club Vice President Bob White at 818-9482 or send an email to [email protected].
