Spring Partners Western Dance Classes

Jane Gromelski

Dancing is a great activity for couples, and it has many benefits. It is great exercise, it builds synapses in the brain, and you do it with your partner. Best of all, it is fun! It’s the only sport where you hold your partner close—forget the luge.

We will teach Beginners Arizona 2-step again in April. You can dance the Arizona 2-step in any venue in Tucson. It’s a very easy, basic step, with a lot of fun twists and turns.

Our series of five classes began on Monday, April 7. Each week we review dance steps from the previous week. Classes will be at 6 p.m. in the Rincon Room. We recommend leather-soled shoes or cowboy boots so your feet will glide on the floor.

At 7 p.m. on Mondays, we will teach Intermediate Arizona 2-step. Our philosophy is, we want you to learn how to dance, not just demonstrate steps and wish you luck! And we feel that since dancing is fun, classes should be fun also, no pressure. It is like any other sport—we practice and build muscle memory.

On Thursdays we will offer Partner Pattern dance classes. These are a fun alternative to the 2-step. We teach dances that have a cha cha basis, a waltz basis, a swing basis, and freestyle. The dances are done in the sweetheart position with your partner by your side. They are similar to line dances in that there is a set pattern of steps that repeat. Introductory patterns will be taught at 6 p.m., and more intricate patterns will be taught at 7 p.m. Classes will be in the Rincon Room every Thursday, running through the end of April. The first dance we teach is the 10-step—10 steps, you can do that!

In addition, on Thursdays in April at 5 p.m., we will teach west coast swing. This is different in that the women dance in a slot north to south and the men dance east to west! This one is fun and challenging!

Partners Western Dance Club hosts a number of dances through April, with the band Wild Ride playing for us. They are so much fun to dance to! It’s just $15 to join the club. We will have a dinner dance on April 16. All the dances are in the MountainView ballroom.

We live in Arizona! Polish your boots, grab your partner and some neighbors, and come join us in the boot-stomping fun of western dancing!
