The Taco Team

Gail Blizard

Word for the day: tacos (no translation needed!)

Our May meeting was a party – a taco party, that is! An energetic team of club members, led by the always creative MaryJo Swartzberg, set out a feast and provided entertainment that made us want to shout, “¡Olé!” If memory serves correctly, a few of us did.

As taco connoisseurs know, a great taco is a careful balance between filling and toppings. The Carne Asada taco filling was purchased at Rancheros Market. It tasted great; as a bonus, we supported a local business. The Taco Team provided all the condiments, including guacamole, salsa, cheese, lettuce, onion, etc. Taco construction was do-it-yourself so everyone could customize to his or her own taste.

The club members provided side dishes to complement the tacos and dessert was a classic “Tres Leches” cake, made with three milks: evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk and cream. It was a fitting end to a delicious meal.

After dinner we had a bingo game in both English and Spanish. The competition was heavy; in the end, the winners of the three small prizes were awarded based on a drawing.

This was our last formal meeting of the season until September but it’s not too late to join so that you receive our monthly newsletter of activities. There may be some informal activities you won’t want to miss and you’ll know our fall schedule of activities ahead of time.

We are a culture club, not a language club, so we’re interested in all aspects of Latin American and Spanish culture including art, music and customs. Speaking Spanish is not required; however, if you’re interested in improving your Spanish, there are opportunities to do that as well.

The club meets monthly on the third Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the SaddleBrooke One Activity Center. We generally have a potluck dinner, followed by our program. Our meetings are conducted in English. Come as a guest and try us out!

Beginning again in September, monthly Spanish-speaking lunches are on the first Monday at noon at the Mesquite Grill. Contact Audrey Tarchine by the Friday before to reserve a spot at [email protected].

If you are interested in joining or would like to attend an event on a trial basis, please contact our membership chairperson, Susan Durchslag, at [email protected].
