A Day in the Life of a Volunteer Driver for Senior Village
Are you curious about the rides Senior Village offers to members? Ever wonder how many miles people drive or the amount of time spent volunteering? Well, each volunteer decides for themselves. A volunteer on the Senior Village Going My Way team decides which requests to accept according to their schedule as well as how far they are comfortable going. There are volunteers who drive only within SaddleBrooke and some who venture down to Banner and beyond.
Andrea Nommensen volunteers on the Going My Way team and explains, “There is no obligation to do specific rides. You pick and choose according to the schedule of requests.” The volunteer looks at the specifics; distance and travel time and accepts the job that works for them. A call is then made to the member to introduce yourself and learn any details concerning the ride that may require extra time. Once the specifics are confirmed, the “members are so happy,” Andrea says.
For Andrea and her husband Sven, who happens to be the team leader for Going My Way, it is not just giving back. She explains. “They are giving to us.” She is happy to talk in the car and learn from the members. She has taken people who are an inspiration to her. When I asked Andrea what the most valued lesson she learned with volunteering, she replied, “Joy of life.” The members of Senior Village are happy and thankful to be here in SaddleBrooke and have the services available through the organization. “They all have their own story.” She continues to share, “I just want to do something good for them.” Andrea and Sven are also members of Senior Village. Although they are not in need of any services currently, they know they’re supporting a good cause.
If you are a new resident or interested in volunteering, Andrea would encourage you by sharing, “I really enjoy it. I meet nice people. I give back to people in the neighborhood. One day you might need help, and you can get it.” Members are happy to receive help from people right in the neighborhood. That is the concept that Senior Village is built on: Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Drive a Neighbor, Lift a Spirit: Volunteers Needed
Linda Hampton
A simple ride can make a meaningful difference.
Senior Village at SaddleBrooke is inviting volunteers to take part in a flexible, once-a-month opportunity that helps neighbors stay connected and engaged. For those who enjoy a short drive within the community and the satisfaction of helping others, this is an easy and rewarding way to give back.
Loneliness among older adults is a growing concern across the country—and SaddleBrooke is no exception. National research shows that approximately one in three adults ages 50 to 80 report feeling lonely at least some of the time. Nearly one-third also say they feel socially isolated. Other studies suggest the numbers may be even higher, particularly among those who are widowed or divorced.
Opportunities for connection matter. That’s where you come in.
Each month, Senior Village hosts a free Music Matinee for the community—an enjoyable and welcoming event that brings residents together. Volunteers are needed to provide transportation for neighbors who may no longer drive or prefer not to attend alone. By offering a ride to one or two individuals, you help ensure that more residents can experience the joy of music and the comfort of community.
The commitment is minimal, but the impact is real. A friendly face, a brief conversation, and a shared experience can go a long way in easing isolation and building connections.
If you’re interested in volunteering, please call 520-314-1042 and select the volunteer option. Volunteer Coordinator Mary Toth will return your call and help you get started.
Sometimes, the smallest gestures—like a short drive—can have the greatest impact.

Life Is Easier Because of Senior Village
Laura Anderson
Have you become a member of Senior Village? If so, you may have met Eric Seniba. Eric is a member and volunteer on the Membership team for Senior Village. An eight-year resident of SaddleBrooke, Eric moved here with his wife of 53 years, Mindy. They moved from Del Web Palm Desert where they lived for 18 years.
Eric has been doing service work for many years. He and Mindy became members of Senior Village four and half years ago and learning the benefits of membership prompted Eric to become more involved. He joined the Membership team three and half years ago and expanded his service to include the Friendly Connections team two years ago.
Eric loves meeting new people. As a career educator, Eric is filled with joy helping others to learn what Senior Village can do for them. “Learning is the epitome of happiness.” When he visits with residents who are interested in joining the organization, he sees his role as sharing information and knowledge that is welcomed. Often, people have put off joining and are asking themselves, “What do I do now?” Eric believes residents should become members as soon as they move in as, “it supports the community and is a mutual benefit.”
“How does a resident know they are ready to join Senior Village?” I asked. “There are many reasons for joining,” he replied. Technical help and transportation, especially for single people, are two of the needs Eric often sees. The Forms and Documents team is an excellent source of information for members. Eric went on to explain the Support team which consists of retired doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and case managers who provide outside resources when needed.
Eric goes on to share, “People wait too long to explore assisted living. Space is not always available when you decide you’re ready.” He suggests getting on the waitlists that can take years for an opening.” That way you have the choice of saying no and continuing to be on the list for the next available space. The Moving On team at Senior Village is a wonderful resource to members for planning this process.
Volunteering for Eric comes naturally. “The rewards far exceed your expectations. I ALWAYS get more than I give and it benefits the entire SaddleBrooke community. Win-win situations don’t get any better. Only if you choose to do so.”
If you choose to volunteer and get involved in the community as Eric has, choose Senior Village. Visit our website for more information at seniorvillage.org or email Mary Toth, Volunteer Coordinator at mary.toth@seniorvillage.org.
