A new SaddleBrooke club was introduced at the recent Activity Fair: Self Defense with Jujitsu.
The club is designed as a discussion and non-lethal demonstrations to deal with “what if” situations. Members are encouraged to join in on the discussions and are invited to participate in the Jujitsu demonstrations as their physical conditions will allow.
All physical activities are performed at half speed where extreme caution is required to prevent accidents.
The instructor, Gary Smith, received his Black Belt Combat Judo Certificate from Tori Ryu Combat Judo – Jujitsu. He is a member of the American Traditional Jujitsu Association and certified by his Sensei, Ben Bergwerf, ninth Degree Black Belt in Jujutsu, sixth Degree Black Belt in USJA Judo and a fourth Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwondo.
Gary Smith and Sensei Bergwerf taught a Combat Judo Course to the South Carolina National and State Guard for eight years.
Ben Bergwerf also authored the Jujutsu Manual, A Complete Course, which is available through Barnes and Nobel and Amazon Book outlets.
Persons wishing to join the Self Defense with Jujitsu Club will be required to sign a waiver and release of liability and agreement to participate form. Meeting times and space will be determined. Participants should wear comfortable, loose clothing or if they wish may wear some type of Martial Arts uniform (Gi), such as used in Karate or Tae Kwondo with sized white belts unless previously ranked in Jujitsu.
The club is designed to be fun, but taken seriously.
