So what the heck is LAGOS? For those who don’t know, it’s the annual tournament where the two SaddleBrooke Ladies’ golf leagues – the Lady Niners and the SBWGA-18 – get together for a fun and competitive day of golf with loads of camaraderie and a luncheon afterwards. Two of the Niners are paired with two of the 18-holers for the round and the tradition has been around for quite some time.
This tournament began in 1991 and it was called the Fiesta Luncheon at that time. In those days the ladies’ leagues played on Thursday instead of Tuesday and their golf calendar year went from September until April. In the spring of 1997 the tournament’s name changed to LAGOS, created by the husband of one of the Niners’ founders. Betty Eikenberry’s husband formed the acronym from Ladies Amalgamated Golf of SaddleBrooke – a name which stuck until the present. We always look forward to this enjoyable day, which this year comes on September 25. This will be our last big tournament before the courses close for over-seeding and it always promises to be a lot of fun. Stay tuned for the results in the next issue.
