SaddleBrooke Freethinkers presents a program on guns in America

This provocative issue will be discussed on April 28 at 10:00 a.m. in the MountainView Ballroom. Our presenter, Dr. Jennifer Carlson, is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Arizona. Her many publications focus on gun politics, gun policy and gun violence.

Dr. Carlson notes that there are roughly 300 million guns in the United States and at least 16 million licensed concealed carry. Debates surrounding guns most often focus on Federal initiatives and the Second Amendment. This presentation will place those debates in a different context: the local political context and everyday ways in which guns matter for both Americans who chose to have them and for Americans who bear the cost of their widespread availability.

SaddleBrooke Freethinkers provides a forum for the responsible search for truth and meaning in understanding and solving human problems by applying science and reason. We believe that tolerance, compassion, equity and civility
should characterize interactions among people and organizations. We strive to achieve these goals through meetings, lectures and discussions. In 2017, Freethinkers initiated a $10 membership fee. In addition to the program events which are open to all, members will also enjoy member-only events through the year.

Freethinker meetings are usually held on the fourth Sunday of each month October through April. The program begins at 10:00 a.m. but attendees are encouraged to arrive by 9:30 a.m. for coffee and fellowship. Non-members are encouraged to make a $2 donation to defray costs. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or cash donations for the Tri-Community Food Bank.
