Frank Lloyd Wright: Visionary Architect

Judy Saks

Frank Lloyd Wright was an influential and innovative American architect, designer, writer, and educator. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the 20th century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and mentoring. He believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. Lloyd Wright also designed interior elements of his buildings (windows, floors, furniture, etc.) and integrated them into these structures. ln 1991 he was recognized by the American institute of Architects as “the greatest American architect of all time.” His works also have a considerable presence here in Arizona, including his architecture school in Scottsdale, Taliesin West.

Please join us as we explore his life and work on Wednesday, March 18, at 10:30 a.m. in the Topaz Room at SaddleBrooke TWO. All are welcome. This presentation may inspire you to visit the residential property in Scottsdale.

Multi-level Contemporary Painting, by Theresa Poalucci. 9 a.m. until noon, Saturday, March 14. Your abstract acrylic painting will draw the viewer into a mesmerizing tapestry of color, texture, and form. Students will be using acrylics, stencils, compound paste, and alcohol inks. Students will choose their design and colors. The completed piece may be heavily textured and have a tactile 2D quality that gives the work depth and dimension, encouraging both visual exploration and a desire to reach out and trace its path. Plus, as a bonus: While waiting for some layers to dry, Theresa will teach you how to make contemporary backgrounds using paint dots and a squeegee.

Cactus with Acrylic Inks, by Theresa Poalucci. 9 a.m. until noon, Saturday, March 21. This is a great class for beginners. The outlines of the cactus will already be drawn onto Yupo paper, so all you have to do is add the color using alcohol inks, a medium which gives surprising results. All supplies are included, and when finished, each student will receive a 9” x 12” white matte and backing to place their 8” x 10” drawing.

Color Is the Key to Illusion, by Pamela Whistance. Noon to 3 p.m., Thursday, March 26. Ever wonder why you can’t quite get the effect you are after? Can’t decide which color to use? And how do you really paint light and form? Through sharpened observation skills and a special technique taught here, you will experience new control in painting. If you can contour draw, this is the class for you!
