Introduction to Ballroom: Merengue and Foxtrot

Dan Plattner

This program is designed for those who have never danced before or those who need a refresher on the basics of ballroom dance. Introductory dances to be taught in February are Merengue and Foxtrot. The merengue originated in the Dominican Republic in the mid-19th century, with African, Spanish, and Creole influences. It is very popular because its basic steps, marching to the rhythm, are quite easy to learn.

The foxtrot was originated by vaudeville performer Harry Fox around 1914. He developed the style using trotting steps to ragtime music. The dance became very popular in the 1920s and 1930s and remains one of the most popular ballroom dances in the world. It uses long walking steps and short quick steps where the dancers seem to glide across the floor.

These dances will be taught by our resident professional instructors Ann and Dale Pizzitola. They teach dance steps with a method that is easy to learn, are extremely patient, and know how to encourage progress. There is no pressure. You just need a desire to learn.

Merengue will be taught on Wednesday, Feb. 4, and foxtrot will be taught on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Both classes will be held in the Mariposa Room at DesertView at 5:30 p.m. There will also be a review session on Wednesday, Feb. 25, also in the Mariposa Room at 5:30 p.m. Classes are open and free to all SaddleBrooke residents, giving you a chance to check them out before deciding if you’d like to join the club. No prior dance experience is required. To register, email countmein@sbballroomdance.com with your name and the classes you wish to attend.

Level 2 and Level 3

Also in February, salsa will be taught by Diana and Lee Wille. Both Levels 2 and 3 are taught on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings, starting on Sunday, Feb. 1. Classes are free for club members, but registration is required, so please sign up online.
