Eight members of the SaddleBrooke Hiking Club hiked in the cool shade and along flowing streams of Madera Canyon on a beautiful September day. Our destination was Roger’s Rock above the Fern Canyon trail. Taking our break on top of this outcrop allowed scenic views of the Green Valley area to the northwest.
The 4.5-mile trail begins around 5,435 feet above sea level and gains 1,135 feet in elevation. This hike was a great way to escape the heat. Temperatures ranged from approximately 70 to 85 degrees during our hike.
Roger’s Rock Ramble
(Sung to the tune of the Gilligan’s Island theme)
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of an awesome hike.
That started out from MountainView
with a long drive down the pike.
The guide was a mighty hiking man,
The sweeper brave and sure.
Six hikers set out with them
For a three-hour tour, a three-hour tour.
The weather started getting hot,
We kept our fingers crossed,
but we’d downloaded an AllTrails track,
so we would not get lost. No! We would not get lost.
The group took a break on the top of this ginormous scenic rock.
With Jeff and Susan Love,
Marc Humphrey, too,
Cathy Meyer and Tim Lawler,
Maria Spencer,
with Dan Malueg and Denis Greenland,
Here on top of Roger’s Rock.
