TOPS is proud to sponsor a classical music concert to be performed by Dr. James DeMars, R. Carlos Nakai and Dr. Stephen Cook. DeMars, TOPS Artistic Advisory Committee member, will be performing his duo-piano sonata, A Diary of the Seasons with former student Cook, the Artistic Director for TOPS. Nakai, renowned Native American flutist from Tucson, will be performing as a welcomed guest of TOPS.
DeMars has written numerous post-modern works for orchestra, chorus and chamber ensembles that frequently explore intercultural collaborations. As an international performer, he was honored in April 2010 with the Arizona Governor’s Award as Artist of the Year and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Music.
Through Cook’s dynamic approach to concertizing, he has thrilled audiences with his synergistic displays of music, art and poetry. Cook studied with luminary pianists Professor Eteri Andjaparidze of NYU and Professor Robert Hamilton of ASU, both TOPS Advisory Committee members. Andjaparidze will be performing at DesertView in 2015.
Nakai has earned two gold records for Canyon Trilogy and Earth Spirit and received nine Grammy nominations. While well-grounded in the traditional uses of the flute, Nakai has also explored new musical settings, including new age, world beat jazz and classical. He is a Native American of Navajo and Ute heritage born in Flagstaff and is now residing in Tucson.
Presentation will be at DesertView Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.
