The Desert Stars, a tap/clogging group (clogging with a flair), has been on the go! The group performed in the SaddleBrooke Variety Show in March, in which it performed a dance routine to the 1960s hit song, Way Down Yonder in New Orleans, by Freddie Boom-Boom Cannon. And in April the dance group performed for the residents of Splendido, featuring dance routines to the songs: Alabama Jubilee, The Clarinet Polka, Lord of the Dance, and the Orange Blossom Special, in addition to its newest routine to Way Down Yonder in New Orleans.
The Desert Stars group performs under the direction of Patsy Chase. Patsy (whose email address begins with tappatsy!) has been around dancing all of her life. She owned a dance studio in Maine for 28 years, she taught a credit course in tap at Pima Community College for 15 years and she has been teaching the Desert Stars for 17 years. Quite a resume for the petite, talented lady who is rarely seen without a smile.
The Webster’s 1913 Dictionary defines dance as: To move with measured steps or to a musical accompaniment; to go through, either alone or in company with others, with a regulated succession of movements, (commonly) to the sound of music; to trip or leap rhythmically. Those of us who are fortunate to be a part of Patsy’s Desert Stars group believe we do just that: We move with measured steps, etc., etc.
Plus, we have a lot of fun!
Members of the Desert Stars include: Marilyn Mitchell, Diane Rhoades, Barbara Sullivan, Tina Wrbanek and Mary Jo Bellner Swartzberg. If you would like the Desert Stars to entertain for your function contact Patsy at 825-2737.
