The leadership of the former Catalina Mountains Satellite Chapter is happy to announce that our organization has become Arizona’s newest chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America (MOAA). For the past eight years, we have been a satellite of the Tucson Chapter.
Becoming our own chapter had been ongoing for some time, and on May 27 the formal application was submitted to obtain a new chapter charter. The national MOAA Board of Directors voted on July 14 in favor of the application, thereby creating the 10th MOAA chapter in Arizona.
We are also in the process of applying to be an Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(19) Nonprofit Veteran’s Organization. One of our primary focuses is helping veterans who are in need of our support and, in particular, those facing homelessness.
MOAA’s president and chief executive officer, Lieutenant General Dana T. Atkins USAF (Retired), will present the charter to the new Catalina Mountains Chapter on Saturday, Nov. 5. A former USAF Thunderbirds Pilot, General Atkins has more than 4,000 hours in various fighter aircraft. At the time of his retirement, General Atkins served as Commander, Alaskan Command, U.S. Pacific Command; Commander, 11th Air Force, Pacific Air Forces; and Commander, Alaskan North American Defense Region, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Details for the chartering ceremony will be published at a later date.
The first meeting of the new Catalina Mountains Chapter will be on Saturday, Oct. 15, and will be held at the SaddleBrooke Ranch Grill beginning at 11:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Fire Chief Randy Karrer of the Golder Ranch Fire District. Chief Karrer will provide an overview of the services that the Golder Ranch Fire District provides to the community, including the recent construction of the new fire station along the entrance road to SaddleBrooke Ranch. He will further explain to the chapter members the organization of the Golder Ranch Fire District.
