The ILR is proud to introduce you to David Stegink, a scholar and an instructor of literature and a musician. David was born in Muskegon, Michigan, and grew up in a family of four that loved music. In fact, they formed The Stegink Family Orchestra with his mother playing piano, dad playing horn, brother playing cello and Dave played violin. He went to Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and earned a B.A. degree there in English in 1964. His interest in literature spurred him on to earn an M.A. in Comparative Literature in 1966 from the University of Arkansas, followed by completion of all the course work toward the Ph.D., excepting the dissertation. David’s love for teaching took him to John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where he taught French and World Literature for two years. He then continued his academic career at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where he taught World Literature. In 1976 he joined the Muskegon Department of Social Services. After 30 years of employment with the department he retired as a Social Work Supervisor. During this period David remained active in the academic community as an Adjunct Professor of English at Muskegon Community College. David officially retired in 2006 and enjoyed the good life of reading, music and playing a lot of tennis. He met Linda Griffin in 2012 and found the best match for all of their mutual interests and the rest is history. He moved to SaddleBrooke in 2013 and now has the perfect lifestyle with Michigan in the summer and Tucson in the winter.
David has been an active instructor with the ILR where he has taught courses in French and Russian Realism Literature, Chekhov and Moliere. In preparation is his new course on Pushkin, the Russian poet, playwright and novelist.
In addition to teaching literature, he is a violinist and played in the Cecilian Ensemble in Muskegon for 20 years. He has also played the violin for the last three years in Linda Griffin’s Musicale held each year in Bear Lake, Michigan. David extended his musical ability beyond the violin and is a baritone vocalist. He has sung in the Muskegon Chamber Choir for 15 years.
We are pleased to have David Stegink as an ILR instructor as he brings his special talents to share with us in SaddleBrooke.
