Judaic Services and Studies news

The Institute for Judaic Services and Studies welcomes back many Institute members and looks forward to seeing you at our celebrations and classes.

The next Shabbat service will be held on Friday evening, January 30, 2015, (Mariposa Room, DesertView Performing Arts Center). Services begin at 7:00 p.m., led by Rabbi Seltzer and Cantorial Soloist Sarah Bollt and accompanied by Carolyn Cochran. The following Shabbat services will be held on February 27 (Ballroom West, MountainView Country Club), March 27 (Mariposa Room, DesertView Performing Arts Center) and April 24 (Mariposa Room, DesertView Performing Arts Center). Please mark your calendar.

An optional dinner at 5:00 p.m. in the MountainView Bistro precedes the lively Shabbat services and an Oneg Shabbat follows services. Reservations for dinner may be made by calling Blanche Waldstreicher at 818-9038. The Oneg Shabbat in January is being sponsored by Carol and Mart Gordon in honor of the birth of their granddaughter Bejla Amelia-Zadie King. Please share in their celebration. Mazal Tov!

Please consider sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat. It is a meaningful way in which to mark a milestone event in the family.

During the past several years, the entire community has looked forward to Rabbi Seltzer’s classes during the winter months.

The first class is scheduled for Monday, January 19, 2015 – What Happens After I Die? Jewish Perspectives on Heaven, Hell and Immortality.

The following two classes will discuss The Origins of What We Know as Interreligious Dialogue and the Judeo-Christian Tradition: Two Surprising Events in Jewish History Without Which Neither Would have Been Possible.

Monday, February 2, 2015 – Session I – When Jews Were Christians and Christians Were Jews and Some Were a Little Bit of Both: Its Enduring Legacy.

Monday, February 9, 2015 – Session II – When Jews Were Ghettoized and the Talmud, the Prayer Book and Other Jewish Texts Censored: Unforeseen Benefits.

All classes will be held in the Mariposa Room of the DesertView Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. and all members of the community are cordially invited to attend.

Heads up! The IJSS and the JFG are working together to arrange a presentation in February or early March by Willy Halpert entitled A Hidden Child, A Journey to the Past. Details to be announced soon.
