Tai chi is an ancient system of exercise that originated in the Taoist temples of China over 2,000 years ago. The monks of the temples developed tai chi as a way to keep themselves physically fit while spending many hours in meditation and also as a means (they hoped) to obtain longevity, even immortality. Current medical research has shown that they were onto something! At least in terms of fitness and longevity.
If you’ve been thinking about learning tai chi, the new year is a perfect time to get started! Tai chi is not difficult to learn, but it does take some time, so patience and practice are key. Most students start to feel relatively comfortable in the beginning class after about six weeks. During this time, they learn the basic movements and sequence of the first section of the Yang-style tai chi (about 17 moves).
