On Feb. 21, 10 members of the SaddleBrooke Hiking Club (SBHC), led by Ray Peale of the SBHC and Chrissy Fitcher of the Arizona Trail Association (ATA), conducted maintenance of a section of the Arizona National Scenic Trail, Oracle Passage #13, for which Ray is the steward. They were happy to welcome back Seana Kobak, Ray’s long-time co-chair.

The work targeted the trail east and west of South Mount Lemmon Road in the general area of American Flag Ranch. This section of trail was found to be in generally good condition, thanks to regular maintenance efforts; however, rainy times and continued vegetation growth mean that the work is never quite finished. The aptly named catclaw needed cutting back, and drainage improvements were necessary.

The ATA provided hard hats, gloves, and tools. Following a safety briefing, part of the group worked with Ray to improve drainage along the trail to reduce erosion. The rest of the group spread out along the trail to tackle the vegetation. Upon returning to their vehicles, they enjoyed tasty treats, soda pop, and laughter.

Trail maintenance is scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month through March. After the March event, the club takes a break and resumes activities in October. If interested in joining these worthy efforts, please email Lori Anderson at [email protected] or Ray Peale at [email protected].
