For the past number of years the SaddleBrooke CycleMasters have purchased new bicycles and helmets for students in grades one through six at San Manuel and Mammoth school systems. The bicycles are part of the awards ceremonies held at the end of the school year. Children are chosen by their teachers and principals for their scholastic improvements as well as their civic contributions. The awards ceremony covers all of their achievements throughout the school year. The crowning glory comes at the end of the program when the bicycles are awarded. The anticipation and the excitement are evident when the names are called and the student stands next to his or her new bicycle.

This program has been coordinated by Ken Perkins, a long standing CycleMaster. Ken devotes numerous hours working with the schools for names of candidates, sizes and gender. Once he is given this information he works with Oro Valley Bicycles to order the correct size of bike so the student can ride it that day. Helmets are also provided as criteria for safe riding. Ken also spends time inspecting each bike to be sure it is ready to ride. This year four CyclemMasters provided their trucks to deliver the bicycles to the respective schools.

The ceremonies were held on May 23 and 24. Nine CycleMasters were present on May 23 and six attended on May 24. Everyone enjoyed seeing these young people awarded their certificates and finally the bicycles.

Providing these bicycles is made possible by CycleMaster members delivering the SaddleBrooke Progress newspaper every month. Delivering almost 40 routes each month is accomplished by the dedicated members and substitutes coordinated by Jack Giovenco.

The CycleMasters have also presented a check in the amount of $500 to Impact of Southern Arizona for aid to their food bank. The summer months are especially difficult when donations are less and the need is increased. The funds for this donation come from raffles held at meetings and socials and a club match. Our club is happy we can make a difference in our community.
