Joyful Dancing in June

Judy Saks

Introductory level classes are designed for those who have never danced ballroom or those looking for a refresher on the basics of ballroom dance.

The classes to be featured in June will be Merengue and American Tango. The Merengue originated in the Dominican Republic in the mid-19th century, with African, Spanish and Creole influences. It is very popular because its basic steps, marching to the rhythm, are quite easy to learn.

American Tango is a stylized, dramatic version of the Argentine Tango, adapted to the American ballroom. This adaptation features steps borrowed from salsas and rumbas. It is known for its passionate character, featuring staccato movements and a close connection between partners. Popularized in films, it emphasizes performance and dramatic flair with a medium tempo.

Ann and Dale Pizzitola, our resident professional instructors, teach dance steps with a method that is easy to learn. They are extremely patient and know how to encourage progress. Classes are held on Wednesdays, 5:30 p.m., in the Mariposa room at DesertView. Merengue will be taught on Wednesday, June 3 and American Tango on Wednesday, June 10. There will also be a review session on Wednesday, June 24, also in the Mariposa room.

Classes are open and free to all Saddlebrooke residents, giving you a chance to check them out before deciding if you would like to join the Club. No prior dance experience is required. To register, email countmein@sbballroomdance.com with your name and the classes you wish to attend.
