Movin’ to the music
Judy Saks
The SaddleBrooke Ballroom Dance Club’s (SBDC) Introductory Level classes are designed for those who have never danced ballroom or those looking for a refresher on the basics of ballroom dance.
The classes to be featured in March will be East Coast Swing and American Tango. As the name implies, east coast swing originated on the East Coast and descended from the Lindy Hop. Dancers move in an upbeat, bouncy way when the music is fast, and when the music is slow, more relaxed steps are used. This makes east coast swing a versatile and popular dance at all social events.
American tango is a stylized, dramatic version of the Argentine tango, adapted to the American ballroom. This adaptation features steps borrowed from salsas and rumbas. It is known for its passionate character, featuring staccato movements and a close connection between partners. Popularized by films, it emphasizes performance and dramatic flair with a medium tempo.
Our resident professional instructors Ann and Dale Pizzitola teach dance steps with a method that is easy to learn. They are extremely patient and know how to encourage progress. You are sure to come away with a good foundation for your continued ballroom dancing journey.
Classes are held on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the Mariposa Room at DesertView. East coast swing will be taught on March 4, and American tango will be taught on March 11. There will also be a Review Session on March 18, also in the Mariposa Room at 5:30 p.m.
Classes are open and free to all SaddleBrooke residents, giving you a chance to check them out before deciding if you’d like to join the club. No prior dance experience is required. To register, email countmein@sbballroomdance.com with your name and the classes you wish to attend. Schedules can change, so be sure to register so that you have the most up-to-date information on time and location.
Level 2 and Level 3 Classes
These level classes are for those who want something more than introductory patterns, as well as for those who have been dancing for quite some time. The featured dance for March is tango. Both levels are offered on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings, starting on Sunday, March 1. These classes are free for club members; however, registration is required, so please sign up online.
Please check out our website sbballroomdance.com to see all upcoming classes and events. No matter what “level” of dancer you are, there is a place for you in the SaddleBrooke Ballroom Dance Club. Remember, SBDC is where the learning continues and the fun never ends!
