Immediately following SaddleBrooke Tennis Club’s Club Championship Tournament, our volunteers gave a party on the patio for members and their guests at which members donated food and drink and were served in the delightfully friendly SaddleBrooke atmosphere. Tennis clubs are recognized as a venue for healthy, active, fun loving people. Ours is the best of them.
Our members, like tennis players everywhere, are thankful and conscious of their good fortune. There are those who are not so fortunate. Therefore, STC member Pat Mauer has often conducted fundraisers in support of the University of Arizona Cancer Research Foundation. This year the auction and donations raised over three thousand dollars on behalf of that organization.
This year an auction has raised funds and provided much fun. Tennis clinics and personal lessons were donated by Pat Mauer, Gene McGeehan, TJ Duffy, Jim Ward and Doug Miller. Kristy and Dave Johnson donated appetizers and drinks at their home, a donation which raised $240 from winner Tami Graeber. There were donations from Coyote Golf Cars, Golf Cars of Arizona, HOA 1, El Charro, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, It’s Greek to Me, Grimaldi’s Coal Brick Oven Pizzeria, Chili’s, massages by Steven Roth and Rebekah Rehrmann, Brake Max, Camp Bow Wow, pillows from Copenhagen and an absolutely beautiful wine and cheese basket that was made up and donated by Joanie Dragon and her tennis friends.
This year Pat did not work alone. Debbie McGeehan (shown in the photo) and many STC members are always anxious to volunteer their time and talent to worthy causes. For example, Sarah Smith spent hours upon hours contacting businesses in the SaddleBrooke area in a successful effort to obtain valuable items to be auctioned. Carol Zupancic did her part by organizing the auction and keeping up with the bids. Pam Willis noted the winners of the silent auction and handled the money and thus became very popular. Bulletin board information about the auction and tennis clinics was the responsibility of Linda Depew.
Well, it wasn’t all about raising money for a worthy cause. It was about a party where friends ate and drank together. Other members, too numerous to name but too important to forget, served all the food we could eat and a variety of hot and cold beverages. You know, “cold beverages”; the kind we all love after a tennis match! That, along with all manner of chips and dips to enhance the appreciation of those “cold beverages.” What a party.
