Why is it so difficult to sleep soundly at night in bed when it can be so easy to snooze in the recliner in the afternoon? Sleep impacts every part of the body and you cannot attain overall health without healthy sleep.
No one understands that better than the presenter at September’s Health Night Out. Dr. Aynur Okcay is a Board-certified Sleep Medicine Specialist. In medical school, she originally intended to be a Family Medicine physician until she did a sleep fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It was then she realized how important healthy sleep is for all body systems.
Dr. Okcay knew as a small child that she wanted to be a doctor. She was diagnosed with asthma as an infant and spent a lot of time in doctors’ offices. Sometimes it was scary but she recognized that doctors had a special power to heal and she wanted to make a difference in people’s lives.
She treats sleep disorders for patients of all ages from seniors to newborns. Common sleep disorders include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and more. Dr. Okcay says that not every patient needs a complete sleep study. Often, she is able to create a plan to improve quality of sleep based on listening closely to her patients’ input.
Dr. Okcay completed her M.D. at Cukurova University Medical School in Adana, Turkey and did her residency at Northeast Iowa Family Medicine Residency in Waterloo, Iowa. Her Fellowship in adult and pediatric sleep medicine was earned at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
