Practicing the ancient martial art of Tai Chi is so beneficial to us as we get “a little older” that it should be “the preferred mode of training,” according to scientists.
Researchers have found that older people who regularly performed the traditional Chinese mind and body technique were less likely to suffer falls or have high blood pressure and were physically stronger. This is not to say that younger people don’t benefit as well! The slow, deliberate, repetitive, calming movements of Tai Chi reduce heart rate and blood pressure and bring a soothing calm to the mind thus mitigating stress of a busy life, career and family.
A consistent practice is key to gaining the benefits, of course. This means one 60-minute class per week and a daily practice of 15 to 20 minutes; pretty doable.
Let 2018 be the year you start Tai Chi. Carol and Kenny Emerson are certified black belts and have been teaching in SaddleBrooke for over 12 years. They teach the Yang family long form (108 moves) as well as the sister arts of Hsing-I and BaGua. Classes are held at HOA One Fitness Center and are $10; cash or check please.
Beginning: Sundays 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (Students learn a short 17 move form.)
Intermediate: Saturdays 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (Students learn the balance of the 108 moves.)
Advanced: Saturdays 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Students deepen practice of the 108 move Tai Chi form and learn Hsing-I and BaGua.
