It may have been a hot, lazy summer in SaddleBrooke but every Monday the Sputter diehards who are still here show up at the HOA 1 practice green to putt and then saunter up the hill to the back of the Roadrunner Grill to get refreshed and enjoy a short social and informative meeting. Over the summer we have been pleased to welcome several new and enthusiastic members to our group: Rosemary Topper, Dee Hackl, Vicki Marriott, Darlene Weprich and Alida Wilkes.
Always a highlight of summer for those Sputters who remain in SaddleBrooke is the August Fun Event and for the fourth consecutive year it was a roaring success. Special thanks to Marianne Lyons, chairlady, and her hardworking committee of Sheila Abraham, Elaine Ackerman, Sue Bartholme, Donna Gruninger, Barbara Lund and Ginny Porteous. On Thursday, August 14, 60 Sputters and their guests donned their denims, boots and cattle rustling gear for indoor/outdoor putting followed by a dinner of hot dogs, hamburgers, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans and the Roadrunner’s variation of S’mores for dessert. Word has it the grub was so good it would have made any chuck wagon cook proud!
The winning team with the lowest score on the difficult but fun course was Julie Brown, Winnie Clay, Gail and Bill Crawford and Ann and Bob Pelton. Winner of most holes-in-one with two was Patsy Chase. All the players at the winning table for cowboy trivia won a can of campfire beans. Always a highlight of the evening is the awarding of best dressed male and female. With a Western theme, the cowgirl winners who tied happen to be two of our new members and also sisters, Sheriff Vic Vicki Marriott and Deputy Dar Darlene Weprich. The cowboy winner was the sheriff’s own spouse, Carl Marriott. As always, everyone had a hootin’ and hollerin’ good time!
The Verde Sputters meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday mornings at the HOA 1 putting green. Membership is open to any resident of HOA 1, 2 and the Preserve not belonging to a sanctioned SaddleBrooke golf group. For more information please contact Trudy Rossi at 225-0275 or Wanda Schultz at 825-5552.
