The Verde Sputters celebrated the 32nd anniversary of its inception, founded by Marj Cantrell. This annual event is played in her honor. On May 6 there were 50 players, consisting of members and their guests. It was a fun day for everyone, and even the weather cooperated. Hazel Roper was low scorer with a 36, Opal Larkin and Laura Berkley each scored a 37, Sue Ryan and Debbie Van Berkom each scored 38, and Deborah Gryniewicz and Jan Haney each scored 39. There were seven Sputters who had two holes-in-one. There were 12 Sputters who got a hole-in-one. Reba Johnson and Mary Halverson went home with money in their pockets.
There were 64 members who attended the Marj Cantrell Luncheon. Eleven past presidents were recognized for their role in carrying out Marj’s dream of ladies coming together in an organized sport to have fun and socialize on a weekly basis: Elaine Ackerman, Karen Martin, Chris McFadden, Lydia O’Connor, Carol Odell, Monica Light, Trudy Miller, Barb Rempel, Lisa Lefebvre, Paulette Stark, and Ginny Porteous (who was not in attendance).
To refresh some of the playing rules, the dress code allows golf shorts (no shorter than mid-thigh), skirts/skorts, and/or slacks. Halters, workout, or yoga wear with spaghetti straps, exposed sports bras, bare midriff tops, or short shorts are not allowed. These rules apply to your guests as well. If for some reason you are unable to finish playing all 18 holes, your score does not count for that week. If you are bringing a guest, please contact Elaine Ackerman at 520-825-8123 or [email protected] on or before the Sunday of the week your visitor will be playing.
Our course set-up for the month of May was done by Donna Gruninger and whoever wanted to help her. Welcoming you at the sign-in table were the smiling faces of Elaine Ackerman and Carolyn Bewalda.
Lydia O’Connor will have office hours for membership sign-up through December of 2024 from 9:15 to 10 a.m. Dues for the remainder of 2024 were due by May 31. Lydia O’Connor will be very happy to answer questions. You may contact her at 507-241-5640 or [email protected].
On May 13 you had to find something else to do, as the main putting green was closed.
On June 3 we started our summer schedule. Sign-in is at 8 a.m. with “putting” beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Putting on May 20 was a bit challenging, as it was all on the upper green, with having to play the same hole twice. This was practice for the summer when that will be the norm for the next three months.
It challenged 41 Sputters and two guests but didn’t deter from getting 28 holes-in-one. Low score with a 38 was Sue Ryan, followed by Wendy Bellamy and Marilyn Palatas scoring a 39. Cheers to Wendy! She’ll be getting a star for her 39. There were six Sputters who had two holes-in-one and 16 Sputters who each had a hole-in-one.
Mary Halverson and Carolyn McLean were the big money hole winners.
See ya!
