Use of AI as a Tool in Genealogy

Genealogists are challenged constantly with how to get past brick walls they encounter while researching their family roots. The resources available are many, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a sounding board to query and help find details hidden in the vast amount of data that exists out there in myriads of databases and public records? Enter AI. AI is a new tool being used to help researchers find that last piece of data that connects the string that needs to be connected to their family tree. Where to start?

The March speaker for the SaddleBrooke Genealogy Club is Laurence Edralin. Most genealogists are not familiar with AI, so Larry will provide a basic understanding of the chatbots currently available, their strengths, and an introduction on how to begin use of them for genealogical research. It’s a primer to introduce the tools to the researcher. Then they can experiment and practice their use, and later dive into specific genealogical areas.

Laurence Edralin is retired and living in SaddleBrooke. He spent 40 years in various roles with computer companies, from the big iron days to the much smaller microcomputers we enjoy today. He retired from Microsoft in 1997, and he enjoys genealogy, serving on the board of the Genealogy Club, and silversmithing, and he attempts to stay abreast of the ever-changing world of technology through participation in the Computer Club as vice president.

The March meeting is on Thursday, March 5, at 1 p.m. in the SaddleBrooke One Coyote Room.

The Genealogy Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Coyote Room at the SaddleBrooke One club facility. Club dues are $15. Speakers are booked with topics focusing on genealogy and research methods. After the presentations, members and guests remain and meet directly with other members to discuss directly where they may be in their research and on subjects that will vary based on the members’ questions and desire to learn more. This includes what tools they use and what software programs they want more information on. Visit the website at saddlebrookeAZGenealogy.org for the latest information on club activities and speakers.
