Villas II residents celebrate July 4
Susan Fusco
The heat of the afternoon on July 4 did not keep Villas II residents from celebrating their nation’s birthday party. They gathered in the driveway and in the street in front of the home of Phoebe and Timm Bax for their annual party. Timm and Phoebe had hung their flag in front of the garage, and the colors of the clothing of the partygoers matched the red, white and blue of the flag of the U.S.A. Villas residents dress appropriately for every holiday occasion, so there were red and white stripes and stars spangled across fields of blue on shirts, hats and dresses. The heat of the late afternoon was oppressive, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the attendees.
Everyone contributed food for the meal and the theme was an old-fashioned Fourth of July. There was fried chicken, potato salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, salads with farm-fresh red tomatoes, macaroni salad, cole slaw and other delicious treats. Dessert included assorted cookies and strawberry-blueberry shortcake. Many people returned to the buffet table for second helpings.
When everyone had eaten all they wanted, the traditional raffle was held. The lucky winners were Phoebe Bax and Judy Tattar. The party concluded with familiar patriotic songs sung by the group, led by Jim Huble. Dusk started to replace the hot summer sun and residents headed for home, air conditioning and the quiet of evening.
