Transgender: A matter of being

Orville Bell and Barbara Starrett

Understanding, accepting and welcoming a transgender member of our society is much more than haggling over bathrooms, as is the concern in some of America’s communities. To be transgender is to acknowledge one’s self; it is a natural condition of humanity; it is a commitment to being – as with other minorities in our pluralistic society. Thankfully, there is an ever-growing community of proud transgenders, as well as transgender-specific adult entertainment sites such as www.shemalehd.sex that can help make life as a transgender less isolated.

On March 31, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. in the HOA 2 MountainView Ballroom, GLAAS (Gays, Lesbians and Allies at SaddleBrooke) will sponsor a panel presentation and discussion featuring Dr. Eric Plemons, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Anthropology Core Faculty, Transgender Studies Initiative at the University of Arizona, along with selected members of the university to inform and discuss with our SaddleBrooke community the topic: Transgender: A Matter of Being.

Dr. Plemons received his PhD from University of California Berkley. As a medical anthropologist, Dr. Plemons is interested in examining transgender issues through the lens of surgical practices and gendered bodies. In the fall of this year, the University of Arizona will host a conference called Trans Studies: An International Transdisciplinary Conference on Gender, Embodiment and Sexuality.

GLAAS Club was created to be a safe, fun and welcoming place for LGBTQ people and their allies in SaddleBrooke. The mission of GLAAS is “to use the power of community and camaraderie to celebrate the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight people (LGBTQ) and their relationships.
