Pool Players of The Brooke (PPB) want to thank our generous sponsors Leah Kari of Secure Senior Health Solutions and Beth Fedor of Realty Executives.

On Sept. 19, the PPB Billiards Club hosted an 8-Ball Singles Tournament in SaddleBrooke One’s Catalina Recreation Center (CRC) Billiards Room. The format was single game, double elimination. Due to COVID-19, all participants were required to wear face masks and sanitize their hands before every game. Only eight players at a time were allowed in the billiard room with the other participants having to wait in the card room or outside to keep social distance. Everyone seemed to endure the masks even though some had difficulty breathing easily and some had their eyeglasses fog up while playing.

Tournament directors were Dominic Boland and Joe Giammarino. The following field of 16 players gathered to play competitive 8-Ball. Phelps “Frenchfry” L’Hommedieu, Tom “Blind Squirrel” Barrett, Jerry Cogswell, Bob “O” Ogle, Steve Wiley, Dick Steinsvagg, Dick “The Visor” Titus, Dominic “The Doctor” Borland, Henry Krebs, Tony “The Snake” Cardillo, Jack Hoverter, Joe “Fast Eddie” Giammarino, Dick “The Stick” Schroeder, Jim “Shooter” Fabio, Lloyd Schmidt, and Steve Horagon.

Results

1st: Tony “The Snake” Cardillo, best cue skills today! 7 wins 1 loss

2nd: Joe “Fast Eddie” Giammarino, not up to the task! 4 wins 2 losses

3rd: Tom “Blind Squirrel” Barrett, almost got there. 3 wins 2 losses

Recap

Tony Cardillo’s path to victory over a field of 16 skilled 8-ballers started by defeating (in order) Dominic Borland and Jerry Cogswell. Then Tom Barrett gave Tony his only loss of the tournament and sent him to the loser’s side. In the loser’s bracket Tony came back strong by outplaying Jim Fabio, Bob Ogle, and then redeemed himself by downing Tom Barrett to get to the finals against Joe Giammarino. Tony would have to beat Joe twice since Joe did not have a loss yet. Tony was the best player today and disposed of Joe in two straight games to win the tournament. Congratulations, Tony “The Snake” Cardillo, your play today was above your opponents!
