Mary (Twink) Gates and Harriet Schemer
The Jan. 20 meeting of the Catalina Timewalkers chapter of The Questers was held at the home of Harriet Schemer. The 11 members attending were pleased to welcome guests, State President Robyn Morin and State Historian Ruth Klinge.
Following a quick business discussion, Harriet presented a program on the Dead Sea Scrolls. She talked about the Essenes, an offshoot of Judaism at the time of Jesus. The community lived a simplistic, ritual life devoted to copying manuscripts whose writing resemble the Old Testament and are the core principles of Christianity. They waited for the coming of two messiahs to cleanse the corrupt Temple Priests and the Romans.
Harriet screened a documentary on the discovery of the scrolls in 1947 at Qumran and what they meant to both Judaism and Christianity, the similarities and differences. She then talked about viewing the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Reagan Library. A lively Q&A and delicious lunch followed.
Robyn distributed American flags among members, and they all joyfully sang “Happy Birthday, America,” celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
