The Merikens: The Journey from the United States to Trinidad

Dr. Nadia W-Charles

Barbara Starrett

SaddleBrooke Freethinkers are proud to have Dr. Nadia W-Charles of the College of Humanities, U of A, speak on Sunday, March 22. The meeting is held at the SaddleBrooke One clubhouse Vermillion Room, with a coffee social at 9:15 a.m., and the program begins at 9:45 a.m.

Prof. W-Charles will trace the journey of people of African descent who escaped enslavement in the United States and fought for the British during the War of 1812. After the conflict, the British Crown granted them freedom and land in Trinidad in recognition of their service. Their descendants on the island are fondly known as “Merikens,” which is the creolized translation of the word “American.” Merikens have established a unique community that blends the cultural traditions they carried with them from the United States and those they encountered in their new Trinidadian home.

Dr. Nadia W-Charles completed her PhD in cultural studies with a focus in Black Nationalism at University of West Indies. She also earned an MSc. in cyberpsychology with an emphasis on online research methods at Nottingham Trent University (England). Her research interests include Caribbean music scenes, consumerism, nationalism, and the politics of difference.
