The calendar for Spanish Culture Club events in 2019 is filling rapidly. January will kick off with a Spanish speaking luncheon on Monday, January 7 at noon at the Mesquite Grill. For more information and to reserve a spot at the table, please contact Audrey Tarchine at [email protected]. On January 18 we will gather for dinner and mariachi music at Carlota’s Restaurant in Catalina – ole!
Our monthly meeting on January 21 will feature Susan Kravitz, speaking on Man of La Mancha. You may know Susan from the classes she offers through ILR (Institute of Learning in Retirement) here in SaddleBrooke. Her presentation will take us from Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th century novel, Don Quixote, on which the musical is based, to connections with contemporary issues. There will be a prize for any Spanish Culture Club member in attendance who has read the entire novel in Spanish.
Looking a bit farther into the future, we are planning an outing to the Tucson Rodeo, “Fiesta de los Vaqueros” in February. We are tentatively planning to attend the play American Mariachi during its Tucson run in March. It is a heartwarming and hilarious new comedy about music’s power to heal and connect and the freedom to dream big.
The Spanish Culture Club focuses on cultural aspects, rather than only the Spanish language. There are opportunities to improve one’s Spanish at monthly luncheons and through Spanish classes, but our meetings are conducted in English. If you are interested in membership information or would like to attend an event on a trial basis, please contact our Membership Chair, Susan Durschlag, at [email protected].
