Our SaddleBrooke Senior Softball facility began construction in 2004 and opened for play in June of 2005. SSSA President Gene Bovee and numerous others were key figures during that time working with Robson to create our current Field of Dreams. The softball complex has been described by many visitors as the best senior softball facility in southern Arizona. The early years began with six teams in two leagues which has now blossomed into four leagues with twenty-two teams during our Winter Season. The field is maintained by a group of volunteers headed by Tim Benjamin. Tim’s team handles the majority of field maintenance (infield grooming, outfield mowing, pre-game prep), with the larger projects farmed out to a private company. It is a twelve-month process by this group to keep our neighborhood complex in tip-top condition which draws many incoming residents to pick up that bat and glove once again.
Another large volunteer role which sometimes goes un-noticed is the dedication of our “Mayor” Paul Buchanan. Paul is at our facility six days of the week with a prominent seat atop the third base covered seating area. Paul is always one to volunteer during tournament set-up, take-down, food prep and cleaning of our facility when many others might not want to take the time. He is softball savvy (just ask him) and can be overheard commenting on a play, player or recalling some of SSSA’s past great moments. We don’t say thanks to you enough, Paul, so thank you for your dedicated services to our league.
Our winter season is coming to an end but here in Southern Arizona SSSA senior softball just reshuffles the deck. A new season started May 6. We welcome all new incoming players, men and women, and will find a spot for you in one of our four leagues.
