In a world increasingly dominated by mass produced goods, the members of SaddleBrooke Pottery Club have found a way to blend artistic expression with everyday practicality, proving that handmade pottery can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The club, which boasts a diverse membership ranging from experienced artists to enthusiastic beginners, is united by a shared passion for the craft. Each member brings their own creative vision to the table, resulting in a vibrant array of pieces that serve not only as eye-catching décor, but also as practical items for daily use.
Maybe you’ve noticed the club’s contributions to our community as you drive around Ridgeview or dine at the RoadRunner Grill. “Lizzie,” the lizard who adorns the wall at Idlewind and Ridgeview, and the colorful pizzas over the pizza oven at the Grill were both made by teams comprised of SB Pottery Club members. Members have also contributed to our larger Tucson community for several years, donating several hundred bowls to the annual Empty Bowls event, an international initiative to fight hunger.
The process begins in the studio where members experiment with different clay bodies, glazes, and techniques. The results vary from the always-practical mugs and bowls to decorative yard art, colorful home décor, to classic and abstract sculptures. Beyond the technical aspects of working with clay, the social dynamics within the club are an essential part of the experience. In addition to planned workshops and demonstrations, members come together in the studio to assist, collaborate, provide feedback, inspire one another, and sometimes to commiserate! Periodic challenges on a specific theme also get the creative juices flowing.
The SaddleBrooke Pottery Club will be showcasing a variety of members’ work during a first-time show and sale to be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the courtyard of the SaddleBrooke One Arts and Crafts center (behind the Gift Shop). We are excited to invite you to experience the unique and beautiful handcrafted pottery made by our local SaddleBrooke clay artists.
