Why do we volunteer?
Judy Cummings
Residents of SaddleBrooke are known for volunteering, and nowhere is this more evident than in Senior Village with 160+ volunteers. Why is it that they give so willingly of their hours? Most volunteers say that, at this stage of life, they enjoy helping others and now have the time to do so. Turns out that philosophy may have some health benefits, too.
According to Reuters Health: “Older adults who have a strong sense of purpose in life may stay more physically fit than people who don’t believe their life has much meaning.” Patricia Boyle, a researcher in Chicago, states that “Volunteering, learning new things, and cultivating relationships, hobbies and interests can be important avenues for increasing one’s sense of purpose in life.”
Bob Perez, a volunteer with the Village’s Helping Hands team and a member of the newly formed Men’s Monthly Social Hour, says that volunteering is a “way of giving back.” He meets new people and helps do simple fix-it projects around members’ homes.
Rob Peters, who has volunteered with Senior Village since November 2018, is also a member of Helping Hands and has attended Men’s Social Hour. He is a handyman who solves members’ computer problems. Rob “feels good about helping people remain independent in their homes.”
Volunteers from the Village would agree with Rob and Bob:it’s all about giving back, having a purpose and the gratitude that members express for the help. If you are interested in volunteering with Senior Village, there is a monthly orientation. The Village has multiple teams, so people can volunteer in their area of interest or an area that fits their special skills.
Teams include: Going My Way for transportation; Residential Lock Box Installation; Helping Hands; Friendly Contact for social visits, meal delivery; Fun With Friends for activities such as Bingo, monthly birthday lunches, putters and more.
Whether you want to volunteer or become a member of Senior Village, all you have to do is call 520-314-1042. Helping others is good for your neighbor and good for you, too!
