Senior Village at SaddleBrooke – February 2025

Annual Electronics & Hazardous Waste Recycling Event

Laura Anderson

It is time to start spring cleaning and organizing those items that can be recycled at the Senior Village Recycling Event. Senior Village is once again partnering with Suburban Miners to make recycling simple. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 29, at the MountainView clubhouse lower parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon. Pack up your cars and trucks. The cost is $10 per carload. There are extra fees for flat-screen TVs ($10) and old CRT TVs ($20).

This event is one of the many ways that Senior Village supports SaddleBrooke. It is a win-win for our community as well as the planet. Please help by disposing of these items properly. We will gladly accept electronics with a cord or battery (e.g., microwaves, answering machines), computer equipment (e.g., hard drives, tablets, printers, with hard drives securely destroyed), TVs (note additional charges), and VCRs and DVD players. You can bring in batteries, fluorescent lights, metal and wire, motor oil, paint and paint thinner, pesticides, fertilizers, household cleaning chemicals, phones (cell and home), and toner cartridges. Items that cannot be accepted include books, cardboard and paper, clothing, furniture, lightbulbs, and propane tanks.

Senior Village members Bonny and Gary Wertz discuss estate planning with Forms and Documents Team advocates Peggy Albrecht and Stephanie Thomas.

Organize Your Estate Planning with Senior Village Advocates

Stephanie Thomas

“I was having trouble sleeping at night worrying about our planning. I felt scattered with everything all over the place. My sister died a few years ago, and that opened my eyes as to the work involved in settling an estate.”

Bonny Wertz knew that she had to get organized and should not put off any longer getting her household information recorded and legal documents drafted. As members of Senior Village, Bonny and Gary had heard of the Forms and Documents Team and its Planning Ahead handbook. Gary called the Village and arranged a home visit with two volunteer advocates, Peggy Albrecht and Stephanie Thomas.

Over the course of an hour, the foursome reviewed chapters in the handbook and addressed questions like: Are your financial power of attorney and healthcare power of attorney up to date? Are your computer passwords noted and up to date? Do your bank and brokerage accounts all have designated beneficiaries? Do you need a Payable on Death document for your checking account to avoid probate? Do you know who you want for successor representatives of your will? Answers to these questions would help the Wertzes document their wishes and minimize chances of their estate ending up in probate court.

Equally important for Bonny and Gary’s planning was to learn how to use Planning Ahead to fill in their personal information that would be useful for their children if/when the children need to handle any of their affairs. The handbook chapters include places to enter account information for finances, insurance, and property. The final chapter explains week-by-week what needs to be done when a spouse is widowed.

After the home visit, the Forms and Documents advocates sent the Wertzes an email summarizing topics they had discussed. The advocates provide information only. They do not give advice or make suggestions.

In a follow-up phone call, Bonny commented, “I feel more in control now and better organized pulling things together. I don’t want to leave all this for our children to do.” Gary reports that he, too, has been spending time on the Planning Ahead handbook.

Over the course of the past three years, volunteer advocates from the Forms and Documents Team have visited more than 300 Senior Village members’ homes to review the Planning Ahead handbook. If you would like to get busy with paperwork and documents that you keep putting off, call Senior Village to schedule a home visit with the Forms and Documents Team at 520-314-1042.
