SBWGA-18 autumn news

Kathy DeMerritt

Our mornings are cooler, the days are shorter and the overseeding of our course is in progress. Many snowbirds are returning. Some of us are taking a holiday while the golf courses are being transitioned, while others are enjoying the quiet days of autumn. We are saying goodbye to the monsoons and the lively lightning storms. Fall is approaching.

The ladies of SBWGA-18 are also preparing for fall and the new year with golf venues including Guest Day and the Cactus Classic. New members have joined the club and the nominating committee is working diligently to fill officer positions for the league in 2015.

Our August Aces are Debra Finn (with a gross score of 82) and Maggie Brown (low net 70). Three new members were introduced at the September luncheon: Pat Anderson, Carmela Pankey and Carol Bidwell. Ladies, welcome to the League and SaddleBrooke. Past hole-in-one ladies were recognized with a plaque. Congrats again to Charley Johnson, Angie Denahan and Debra Finn.

Co-chairs Wanda Hutchinson and Dudie Lewis invite all members to participate in Guest Day, October 28. Members may invite up to three guests for a fun day of golf. Taking advantage of the late October date, the tournament will have a Halloween theme with prizes for the best team costumes. It should be a wonderful day.

The Cactus Classic is November 4, 6 and 11 and will be co-chaired by Phyllis Sarrels and Kathleen Houser. This is one of our major tournaments and players will be required to play all three days. There will be one low net winner over the field as well as winners in their respective flights. Past Cactus Classic winners are Jane Wilson, Kay Kunze, Audrey Costello, Sylvia Kastelic, Judy Fick, Ann Sears, Ann Running, Carol O’Neill, Jean Moliter and Bardie Plunkett. Members are encouraged to play and add their name to the long list of winners!

Did you know the SaddleBrooke Women’s Golf Association – 18 was founded in 1988. Joan Hartman was the first president of our league. At that time SaddleBrooke was in its infancy. We had only 18 holes of golf with SaddleBrooke being the first nine in 1985 followed by the Tucson nine in 1986. The Catalina nine came later in 1993. If you have some information about our league in its early years, please contact me at [email protected]. I would enjoy talking with you and being able to share this information in future articles.
