SaddleBrooke Swim Club’s expectations for a high team ranking at the Misty Hyman Classic swim competition in Mesa on February 14 and 15 were not particularly high given the numerical strength of the host club Mesa Aquatics over the smaller contingent of SaddleBrooke swimmers competing in the two day event. However, at the end of the meet when the results were announced, all the swimmers were surprised to hear that Mesa Aquatics defeated SaddleBrooke by a razor thin margin of only 29 points—2879 to 2850!
SaddleBrooke dominated the senior age groups with swimmers Jack Allison, Doug Springer, Phil Simpson, Ken McKinney and Jack Fritz receiving the High Point Award in the five different age categories from 60 to 80, respectively. To gain this prestigious recognition, the swimmers’ accumulated point totals for each individual race swam must be higher than each of their competitors in their respective age category.
Swimmers Gene Hildreth and Corinna Goodman also turned in notable performances. Gene, swimming all the Freestyle events as well as a Butterfly, won five events. Corinna competed in ten tough events, finished a close second for the high point award in her age group and received the prestigious Misty Fly Award from Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman for her efforts.
