SaddleBrooke Singles Laugh at Chili Potluck

Lori Anderson

More than 50 members of the SaddleBrooke Singles Club enjoyed chili and other victuals on April 15 at SaddleBrooke One’s Activity Center. Besides the usual accompaniments to chili (cornbread, chips, and salsa), club members provided alternatives to chili, side dishes, and desserts. There were plenty of delicious calories to go around.

Chili was prepared by Walter Mercer, Ellie von Michaelis, Ray Nichols, and Lori Anderson. The four simmering pots of chili of varying recipes were presented to two judges for tasting. The judges, SaddleBrooke residents Sue and Dave Richardson, sampled each chili, remarking on the flavors and ingredients. Spices, beans, beef, pork, bacon, beer, tomatoes, onions, garlic, chili peppers, bell peppers, and/or red wine in varying proportions comprised the recipes. One pot was vegan, another contained no beans, and all were delicious. After much sampling, joking, and discussion, the judges pronounced the chili created by Ray Nichols the winner. Sarah Smith presented awards/gift certificates, and then it was time to dine.

After dinner, SaddleBrooke’s own Magic Ken Marich, assisted by wife Reluctant Barbie, entertained us with magic and humor. Audience participation added to the fun. After much laughter, Sarah Smith presented a token of appreciation to our treasurer Ray Peale who is moving out of state.

We are grateful for the nearly one dozen members who helped with the set-up and clean-up of the Activity Center and the four who made chili. Additionally, a huge thanks goes to Sarah Smith and Walter Mercer for organizing the event and bringing in the judges, prizes, and entertainment. We would also like to thank the following businesses that donated gift certificates:

• Carrabba’s Italian Grill

• Serenity Salon & Spa

• Rosati’s Pizza

• Harvest Restaurant

• Pottery Fiesta

• The Keg
