The summer heat has really been making this summer very difficult for many of us to enjoy our walks, relax at the pool, and take time to see friends and family. As caregivers, we have so much to think about with our neurologically impaired loved ones that we forget about ourselves physically and emotionally. It takes so much careful planning, considerations of how to travel, help from airlines and cruise ships, all the details necessary to finally have a safe trip.
This consideration for you, the caregiver, in your role of putting it all together, is to encourage you to be physically and emotionally well by doing what will not only help, but will so much improve your attitudes towards your loved one. So, please:
1. Breathe: Stop and take a few deep breaths and relax.
2. Drink lots of water—not soft drinks, but water.
3. Nourish your body: Eat healthy, skip the sweets, but eat those salads, fish, and proteins.
4. Sleep: Try to get eight hours of shuteye. Sleep helps to clear and rest the brain and the body.
5. Move your body: Do more walking around the house, exercising each day moving your body.
6. It’s equally important to take a break. It’s important to have your time. Ask a friend to stay with your loved one occasionally so you can nap.
