The second annual Jeff Shields/Charles Schwab Senior Men’s Putting Tournament, hosted by the SaddleBrooke Men’s Putters group (SBMP), was held on Friday, September 9. Lead sponsorships, hole sponsorships, raffle ticket sales, advertising and entry fees fueled the contributions to local organizations and charities from this non-profit event.
The event netted $3000 which was distributed in the following manner: a check for $1000 was presented to The American Diabetes Association by Jeff Shields, the title sponsor of the event, and the remainder of the proceeds were shared by The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, the Canyon del Oro High School golf program, the Ricki Rarick Junior Golf Program and Boy Scout Troop 739.
The other lead sponsors of this event were Sonora Investment Management, the Cleere Law Offices, P.C., Pride Mechanical Heating & Cooling, David Rutkowski – Tierra Antigua Realty and the Don Stone family. Also, major raffle prizes were donated by the Omni Tucson National Resort, Jared the Galleria of Jewelry, Highlands at Dove Mountain golf, Oro Valley Country Club golf, MountainView/Preserve/Ranch golf, Robson Ranch golf, SaddleBrooke HOA 1 golf and Rancho Vistoso (The Views) golf.
Seventeen teams from nearby courses and groups participated. The winning team was SaddleBrooke Men’s Golf No. 2. The members of that team were Beaver Simpson, Terry Edwards, Fred Pilster and Peter Wright. Beaver Simpson won individual honors with the low score of 34.
A luncheon for 120 participants, sponsors and volunteers followed the event in the Vistas Dining Room at HOA 1. The luncheon was outstanding thanks to the hard work of the HOA 1 Food and Beverage Staff along with the HOA 1 Administrative Staff.
Prior to the tournament Pat Parris, the anchor of the Good Morning Tucson show on KGUN 9 television, presented a very heartwarming story with interviews and camera footage that appeared on his morning show. Harlan Hobbs, current SBMP president, said, “We look forward to hosting this tournament again next year and we will see what we can do for an encore.”
Tentatively, next year’s event will be held on September 8, the Friday after Labor Day. Start forming your teams for next year!
The SBMP, 134 members strong, invites all SaddleBrooke men (HOA 2 and the Ranch included) to join us for our weekly events on Thursday mornings. Currently we practice at 8:00 a.m. on the SaddleBrooke HOA 1 putting green and then we conduct our putting tournament from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. This schedule will continue through September and then change for the fall and winter months when we return in November after overseeding.
